There’s a difference between feeling nervous sometimes and having anxiety issues.
Everybody feels a sense of worry now and then, but some people deal with constant anxiety in their daily lives. Over 19% of all Americans deal with anxiety disorders, suffering from debilitating symptoms while conducting basic tasks.
However, some people have a specific type of anxiety that isn’t so obvious. Sometimes, people with anxiety problems are able to hide their struggles. Some mental therapists refer to this condition as high-functioning anxiety.
Learn more about high-functioning anxiety and ways to manage it below!
The term “high-functioning” has been subject to much debate recently. It colloquially refers to people who can cope with their mental health issues at a “higher” level than others. High-functioning anxiety is not a proper diagnosis in the DSM-5, but its symptoms are very real.
People who have high-functioning anxiety don’t exhibit obvious or apparent behaviors typically associated with anxiety disorders. Their anxiety issues tend to manifest outwardly in subtle ways.
People with high-functioning anxiety often conceal or downplay their anxious behaviors. Many people refer to this phenomenon as “wearing a mask,” which is a common behavior in people on the Autism spectrum.
There are some common symptoms that indicate high-functioning anxiety if you pay close attention.
· Overthinking: Patients tend to over-analyze situations that don’t require it. They ruminate over everything that could go wrong and struggle to leave that negative headspace.
· Restlessness: Patients often struggle to relax or enjoy leisure activities due to a persisting sense of dread.
· Procrastination: Patients might avoid starting and finishing tasks due to the fear of failure. They often feel anxiety over being inadequate or underqualified for certain tasks.
If you or someone you love is struggling with high-functioning anxiety, know that there are ways to overcome it. Building a support system, practicing self-encouragement, and having creative outlets can help significantly. Don’t hesitate to discuss your feelings with loved ones; it helps alleviate some of the stress.
