When people think of the term ‘healthy,’ they probably think more about the physical connotations than the mental ones. However, many mental health issues are just as, if not more, debilitating as some of the most horrible physical medical conditions. With the right mental health counseling services, people can enjoy a significantly better quality of life. However, many people never get the help they need because of a lack of access.
Everyone has the right to access high-quality health care regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, constant discrimination has deprived many people of mental health services, either because they’re unaware or because treatment is too far out of reach for them.
Mental health issues can become unbearable to live with for many people. Simultaneously, these problems can also affect society, especially when treatment is delayed, or people don’t get treated at all. According to statistics, mood disorders like bipolar disorder and depression are part of the top 3 reasons why people get hospitalized in the US. Also:
· Adults in America who have some kind of mental illness tend to die around 25 years earlier than others. Most of their conditions are usually treatable.
· 37% of teenagers who suffer from mental health issues stop pursuing an education.
· 90% of the children who commit suicide suffer from some mental health issue.
To promote equity, individuals and organizations need to amplify the voices of people with disabilities, people of color, and those of the deaf community. Listen to their unique experiences and take their word for it. It’s important to learn more about the societal stigmas placed on these groups and address how you might contribute to them.
