Substance use disorder, otherwise known as addiction, is a complex and chronic condition that affects thousands of people in the US. It happens when a person starts to become dependent on an external substance, such as alcohol or drugs and experiences negative consequences due to their use. Addiction can be extremely difficult to overcome, but there are ways to get treated and live a healthy life that’s free from substances.
Here are some common substance abuse treatment options:
Behavioral therapy is a common form of treatment that helps people change their attitudes and behaviors toward substance by developing coping skills, addressing underlying trauma and psychological issues, and identifying triggers. Some common types of behavioral therapies include CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), contingency management, and motivational interviewing.
In CBT, the patient is taught to actively replace their negative thoughts and behaviors with positive ones. Contingency management helps people reward themselves for staying sober, which helps reinforce any positive behaviors. Motivational interviewing helps people explore their personal goals and values to be able to find the motivation to change.
MAT is the use of medication along with therapy to help individuals manage their cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Medications such as buprenorphine and methadone might be used to block the pleasurable effects of drugs and make it easier for people to resist using them. MAT is rather effective but should only be used under the proper guidance of a professional healthcare worker.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are support groups that provide individuals with the understanding, empathy, and compassion of a supportive community of people who’ve been through a similar experience. Support groups are great for helping individuals take accountability since they’re encouraged to share their setbacks and progress with the group.
If you or someone you love have a substance use disorder, it’s important to intervene early and talk to a psychiatric nurse before things get worse. Once the addiction kicks in, it can be extremely difficult to stop. Remember, everyone has a different journey to recovery, and something that worked for one person might not work for another.
